As one of the first dozen staff members on the Liberty Science Center start-up team, Barbara Punt had positions of increasing responsibility. She started as an exhibit researcher for 3 galleries, then progressed to Exhibits Project Manager and finally was promoted the Director of the Design and Production department. Building upon her previous experience as an exhibit designer at the Franklin Institute for their Futures Center, she managed the work of the all the outside exhibit and lighting consultants leading to the 1993 opening.
This included dovetailing the exhibit design and installation schedules in conjunction with the building architects’ and general contractors’ work. Subsequent to opening she was promoted to Director of the Design and Production department. She streamlined the operations department and reduced the level of nonworking exhibits from 13.6% to 4% within one year, and reduced overtime by over 75% by increasing the efficiency of staff scheduling and cross training.
Based on her strong experience on staff, Liberty Science Center hired Punt Consulting Group to advise on government funding reporting requirements, vendor management, and change order negotiation. Punt Consulting Group also developed and negotiated a wide range of contracts including those for exhibit and lighting design and site-specific artwork. Outside the exhibit realm, this work included contracts for AV/IT fit out of the entire building, photovoltaic systems on both owned and leased property (including different energy credit calculations for both), as well as a host of traveling exhibit agreements for both domestic and international projects.
At Liberty Science Center, when we began planning to develop RFPs and contracts as part of our expansion, I immediately thought of having Barbara work with us. She had done a terrific job in handling the exhibit install and contractual relationships between contractors and Liberty Science Center when it first opened, and I knew we could count on her expertise and professionalism this second time around. I have many problems to worry about with our expansion. Happily, with Barbara on our team, our agreements with our contractors are not one of them.Connie Claman CFO and VP Resource Administration, Liberty Science Center
