Housed in a building designed by Antoine Predock in 1997, the Arizona Science Center’s exhibits were out of date and in need of redesign 10 years after opening. Punt Consulting Group was brought in to manage the first years of the phased $25 million exhibit revitalization, which took place in a building still open to the public and operating an IMAX theater and digital planetarium as well as those galleries not yet undergoing renovation.
In addition to negotiating the exhibit contracts, overseeing the exhibit development, design, and fabrication, the Board and CEO hired Punt Consulting Group to mentor the staff and provide professional development for a largely young and inexperienced group of manager and directors. Focused attention was paid to upgrading the accounting systems to track multi-year capital projects and produce reports for multiple funding sources; writing an operations and safety manual for staff reference; fostering team development in a new paradigm for program and exhibit development; and conducting a nationwide search to fill the newly created position of Director of Guest Experience.
Punt Consulting Group provided budget and schedule creation and tracking, contract negotiation and management (for the exhibit projects as well as the planetarium upgrades), and staff development to ready them for the next generation of the Arizona Science Center.
